The Heartbeat of WATCH THE THRONE

Whether we live in a country with a monarchy or not, all of us are fascinated to watch what happens on the throne. We look at kings and queens with a mix of admiration and envy and awe. We obsess about royal weddings and celebrate royal pomp and circumstance.

This impulse to be royal watchers is as old as monarchy itself. Thanks to history, we can watch the throne of past dynasties as well as those in the present day. When we watch the throne, we can learn lessons in many areas – even what it means to follow God.

God calls us to Kingship – the exercise of authority on behalf of His Kingdom. But not everyone uses the authority God gives in the right way. We learn this when we watch the throne of the kingdom of Judah in 2 Chronicles. Some of these kings rebel and enthrone sin in their lives, as King Jehoram did. Some start well but end poorly, like proud King Uzziah. But some exercise Kingship faithfully, like King Jotham. And even the worst of us can turn around and begin to follow God, as evil King Manasseh did.

In this series, we’re going to watch the throne of the kingdom of Judah. As we do, we will learn lessons that help us exercise the Kingdom authority God gives us.

The Heartbeat

Session Outlines

Session One :: Enthrone
2 Chronicles 27:1-9
The point: When it comes to Kingship, leading well begins with living well
Jotham’s life shows us what it looks like to live well and how doing so helps us lead when it comes to kingship. Through faithfulness and obedience, Jotham lived up to the call to Kingdom authority in his life. His example reminds us that leading well begins with living well.

Session Two :: Sin Throne
2 Chronicles 21:4-20
The point: When it comes to Kingship, pursue power instead of position
We often think that power comes when we reach a position. But the life of Jehoram shows us that a position is no guarantee of power. Instead of merely chasing positions, we need to pursue power by lessening our resistance to God so that He can use us for His Kingdom purposes.

Session Three :: Dethrone
2 Chronicles 26:1-23
The point: When it comes to Kingship, accomplish your commission through continual submission
Uzziah thought his royal position gave him the authority to do what he wanted when he wanted. But helearned the hard way that refusing to submit to God can have severe consequences. Thankfully, we can learn from his negative example and accomplish our commission through continual submission.

Session Four :: Rethrone
2 Chronicles 33:1-20
The point: When it comes to Kingship, let go of your resistance and lean into repentance
Despite a lifetime of rebellion, Manasseh chose to repent in his final days as a king. When he did, his story became marked not by rebellion but by restoration. The same is true in our lives, because it’s never too late to let go of your resistance and lean into repentance.
