The big announcement: A global CHURCH planting initiative
For the last few years, there has been an idea stirring within the wider team of people I get the pleasure of working with across the globe. As most of you know, I serve as the leader of 3DM, an organization that trains leaders for discipleship and mission in a world that is increasingly post-Christian.
But I help lead something else as well…something called The Order of Mission (TOM).
What is TOM, you my ask? I’m happy to share with you.
The Order of Mission (TOM) is a covenant family of Kingdom leaders living into the mission of God on six continents. It is a group of people who see their primary vocation as missionaries, have taken lifelong vows of simplicity, purity and accountability and all live by the same Rule of Life. (Some people refer to this as a neo-monastic order).
And it is with this group of people that we are starting a church planting movement called The TOM Project, beginning in the United States and Europe. You can check out the website for The TOM Project here.
However, it is targeted specifically for college campuses so that, in 20 years, their will be fruitful Kingdom expressions on every college campus in the United States and Europe.
We are starting in the United States first and then in the very near future, expanding to Europe with some very similar strategies.
In the United States, we have two strategies for going about this:
- We are going to plant on the 100 most influential campuses in the United States.
- We are starting Learning Communities to train leaders of communities who are already on college campuses (think chapters of IV, Cru, FCA, college churches, etc) and new church planters. Our first such Learning Community will be on February 17-22 in Pawleys Island, SC.
We’ll be sharing a lot more about this initiative in the next few days. But here are two easy ways to find more info:
- You can visit The TOM Project website by clicking here.
- You can read the whitepaper explaining the rationale for this initiative written by Doug Paul and Jo Saxton by clicking here.
I can’t wait to share more about this initiative in the coming week. It’s gonna be a live one, this one!

Hi Mike,
The links to the white paper (both from here and from the TOM Project website) go to a Page Not Found 404 Error.
If you can get that fixed, I’d be very interested in reading it!
Mike,
I heard you speak at Anglican 1000 this past winter. Daniel Adkinson directed me to this blog post. I work on-campus at Baylor, am a volunteer with InterVarsity, this winter I’ll be ordained in the Anglican Church, and my hope is to plant a kind of L’Abri-like missional community here on campus. I’m very interested in what you described above. If you would have interest in working together, please contact me at your convenience.
Thanks for your time.
Grace & Peace,
Carson
